How I play No One Lives Forever

Post by ward »

EDIT: This game works fine on Windows 10... I have wasted 2 days testing it on 11 and it won't launch like this or with dgVoodoo2.

No One Lives Forever is one of those great games lost to licensing nonsense. If you don't own a copy, then you are mostly out of luck (not really). You can't get it on GOG, Steam, or any digital store (as far as I know). It can be a nightmare to get it running, so let's do it in the most simple way possible.

[This tutorial is mainly for me... because the first time I tried to install this on W10 was extremely annoying.]

//------------------------------------------//
Regarding the physical editions:
This tutorial is NOT for the physical editions... but, in that regard... It's important to grab a copy of the GOTY edition because it isn't loaded with DRM. It simply does a CD check, which is easy to bypass. If you do not have GOTY, at least make sure you are upgraded to 1.04: https://soggi.org/misc/game-patches.htm

//------------------------------------------//

Get the game:
Luckily it's abandonware, so who cares how you get it. This site has an all-in-one exe that installs the game and configures the registry:
No One Lives Forever GOTY 1.04 + Modernizer + nocd patch + mods - DOWNLOAD OPTION 1:
https://www.ego-clan.com/downloads.php

Install the game
  • Run the exe (virus scan first if you want)
  • It will ask where to install, just put it wherever.
  • I did not have to run the post install bat file, but you might need to (not sure). Skip it for now./list]
    It will add a bunch of registry entries to Windows so it will be properly "installed."
    The game is now installed.

    Configure it
    Before you launch the game, it's probably best to run some compatibility settings on the EXE file.
    • Right click the NOLF.exe and click properties and go to the -> compatibility tab
    • Checkmark "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and select Windows 7
    • Checkmark Disable fullscreen optimizations & run this program as an administrator
    • Click "Change high DPI settings" and checkmark Override high SPU scaling behavior and select "Application."

    Note: These settings keep reverting to defaults on my. You will know that they have reverted if you open the game and it doesn't verify admin rights/etc.

    Now you can launch the game... When you open it, you get the launcher, here are my options in the Advanced menu:

    Code: Select all

    -rez NOLF.rez -rez NOLF2.rez -rez nolfu003.rez -rez NOLFCRES003.rez -rez NOLFGOTY.rez +DisableMovies 1
    Be cure to also click "Customize" and make sure Modernizer.rez is on the right side.

    If the game window opens and it is not centered on the screen, DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING until the game has loaded to the main menu screen. Then you can click to toggle it as active and move it around. If you click before, it will basically crash or lock the game.

    Lastly... mouse jank... the mouse SUCKS in this game, but should be good with this version of the game. It can be very jittery if you aren't running with vsync on at 60fps. Even then, it's rough.
    You made need to do this in your gpu control panel:

    Good luck... That's the end of it.

    Get the 3DSL version, which is basically the game and some extra files. Should be 916 MB.
