Forums need to make a comeback

Post by TheCowboyOnline »

As per the review video of the UGREEN AI NAS iDX6011 Pro - yes, forums absolutely do need to make a comeback. The online world, indeed the world, was a better place before social media was a thing. Let's bring back forums, ICQ, MSN Messenger, etc.

Hell yeah. You are in before "official launch," so cheers and welcome. Forums were the real communities back in the day... and I feel like niche is dying, but we don't have to allow it to happen. Apparently Trillian is still a thing... no idea if it's secure or not... but those were good times.

Thanks for the welcome, and Trillian - yeah, I used that as well back in the day. Not extensively, as I didn't find it to be a major issue having ICQ, AOL Instant Messenger, and MSN Messenger running at the same time. I still have the same PC, as a 'retro gaming' set-up, that I used back then as well. A Pentium 4 3.4 HT based system. Good for keeping the room warm in the winter too.

I know IRC is still around if we're looking for old school cool chat rooms. I do miss MSN messenger, I loved how that application respected screen real estate. So small and compact so it would be out of the way.

Yeah, MSN Messenger had a great compact UI. Modern app design seems to assume they'll be run full screen.

I still remember my ICQ login details too!!

I've really missed forums as well. I'd take something like this 1000000x over modern garbage corporation social media

It's awesome to have you. Welcome @WhiteSnake9191. Cheers for coming over from the fediverse site. Forums are awesome, but I'm realizing they require more effort than modern social media... with that, you basically lean back, fuck up your neck, and scroll until your lonely and sad, lol. So, this is higher effort, higher reward.

I think it'll grow as people decide to put in the effort to get back into real communities.

Yeah, the thing also is that modern social media is so frictionless that it's so much easier for it to become a habit. And it's not just the sites but the devices themselves seems to be just made for each other. But well, everyone knows the price of that seemless experience is an ocean of crap
