What are you playing?

The technological jump from 1990 to 1992 was bigger than the jump from 2010 to the present day... So, it's all modern.

Last night I was browsing on youtube and to my biggest suprise i got a Dayz recommended video. Having played it from Feb 2014 to Sep 2015, i got the itchy feelings to play it again. Watched a non commentary video from 2014 and i felt homesick. Decided to instal the game, play for a few hours, but it didn't feel like coming home. Alot has changed.

Dayz has a launcher now, and there are official and community servers to choose from. Felt overwhelming.
The game doesn't feel and look so dark and harsh as i remember. It lacks the gritty atmosphere and the eerie ambiance. Dayz got a engine update so i've red, and it finally runs smooth thanks to that i assume.

Not sure what im feeling or missing, is it nostalgia? I believe the game has improved alot, but I decided to quit playing, for now. Will give it another go for sure, as I did had alot of fun.

Just picked up Unreal Tournament 2004 today and played a quick match. Epic just made it free and a patch in 20 years.

I think I'm about finished with No One Lives Forever now... Got about half-way through... had some fun memories... but it didn't age that well (the jank of playing it on modern systems is a bit much too). Now I'm in the mood for weird modern indie... so it's time to dig through the backlog and see what I've picked up recently. The Nioh games do look awesome... I'd almost rather watch someone play for a while. I'm not sure if my stress levels could handle it at the moment, lol... I kinda need stupid/weird/chill/ or old school run and gun... or even platformers to de-stress these days.

OH right! forgot about that... It's my second favorite behind the original... that would be a fun game night, lol. Time to grab that.

It has been a minute since I last play some UT, I'm gonna need to get that installed and freshen up my skills.

I wish I had a CRT on hand for that more authentic experience.

Lol... looks like we are all on Unreal... I just stayed up until 6AM playing Unreal Gold... I blame @Cuzza !!! lol. Haven't done this in a while. I got DX9 working well... the latest openGL was flickering like crazy. Here's my ini in case anyone wants it. Using a 4080 Super... Tested at 3840x1600 then switched to my CRT at 1280x960.

game folder...

@Herzeleid regarding DayZ... I think I know what you mean. The fancy lighting really ruins the atmosphere of some games. I haven't seen the new engine and such, but does it have ray tracing or something? Old games with RTX always look terrible to me... It kills the mood. If the volumetric lighting and volumetric fog are turned up too high, that can all make things look softer and brighter. I wonder if the old style could be achieved by turning some settings down.

I ended up disabling some of the modern enhancements in Unreal for this reason... specifically the new texture blurring (I forget what it's called, but it is in the menu) and anti-aliasing needs to be off... then it looks better.

UT and UT2004 are excellent for a lot of reasons, but man, am I just dreadful at arena shooters. I think people who are good at arena shooters are really rad. One day I'll find one where I don't go 2 and 50.

Currently I'm trying to work my way through Mass Effect: LE on my steam deck. I played through ME2 & 3 during lock down and loved them! I skipped ME1 at the time due to me playing the opening 3 or 4 hours half a dozen times in the 360 era and couldn't bring myself to go through it yet again.
I've also made an attempt at Dark Souls 3 on PC. I've only ever played Elden Ring when it comes to souls like but didn't get very far in it. DS3 is a game that doesn't disappoint when it comes to the hype that it gets. It's every bit as good as people say!

I know, I know... I really shouldn't, but I'm currently re-living 2007 and playing wow: the burning crusade, in a nice guild with like-minded people and really enjoying it.

Just got Unreal Tournament 2004 so will be trying that out along with Torchlight II. Seems like a cozy game! Been also doing another play through of Deus Ex, my problem is finding time to game more...
