Forums, categories, and other ideas

Post by ward »

So, I made some basic categories for gaming and media. Should tabletop be a separate category or a category under gaming? I'm thinking maybe separate with some categories like old-school, etc.

Then we need to figure out console gaming... do we have a separate forum for each console? Do we break it down by era (8bit, 16bit, 32bit, etc.)?

What else do we need?

Theme
Oh, I hate these emotes... should I kill them? any ideas? I'm also not fond of the topic icons, but they are part of the package. As for themes. I'm working on a RazeTheWorld theme. There was a LoL theme that seems like it will be easy to adapt. I'll install a ton of other theme so you can test them (in your user settings) and see if you prefer one over the other.

Oh yay, I can post now!

I think that tabletop is fine as a gaming subcategory. I love tabletop but I'm unsure if folks who sign up here will be enthused enough to warrant it having its own category....would it be possible to change this in the future? Like, say we get an influx of hardcore tabletop nerds who want to talk about old school systems and the like, could a subcategory later be repurposed into its own 'proper' category? I know next to nothing about how forums work on the backend.

For consoles, I think breaking it down by era would be best. Separating it into boards for each console would almost feel like clutter, at least for me.

Yes, please kill these emotes. They are HIDEOUS. Is it possible to add your own? I'm liking the theme selection and i wouldn't be opposed to more.

Excited to see how things go here!

I'm honestly leaning toward it being separated from PC gaming because tabletop is my first love... AND I have about 150 pages of a rule-book written. So, as I quit hardware (about a month) and focus on gaming... I'm sure we will get more PC and tabletop gamers. Ultimately, the forums are good, but I think the active topic list will be more important at first. I won't promote the forum until the theme is nice and things are set up... and we have mods.

So, I figured out how to replace the smiles... We have a bunch of ugly orcs now. However, I am going to set these up:

This reminds me... we have attachments, but I want drag and drop image support... and S3 compatible uploads. Stuff to put on my list...

The ugly orcs are a big improvement....

edit: the orcs appear when composing my post but they still show up as regular ol' emotes when posted. Very odd!!

Posting works for me as well now. The emotes look like lol Shreks lol
Since we already have some dedicated tabletop players, I don't think having a separate category for tabletop would be such a bad idea.
I had messaged ward separately since I couldn't post yet, but I mentioned that we could try splitting up console gaming into retro and modern, with retro being anything before the 360 era.

Added a bunch of profile fields... feel free to fill them out and let me know what else you'd like to have. We have have LOTS of fields and they will only appear if you fill them out. So, get creative. What do you want?

Cheers! Love filling stuff like this out. Can't think of more I'd add, but I'll let you know if I do.

Started to fill out my profile when I realized that, since most of us do some amount of PC gaming, we all probably have Steam accounts. I think that'd be a good field to add in for profiles.

I also noticed there were two separate fields for Fediverse accounts. Not sure if that was intentional or not.

@bumbervevo
Good call. I'll add Steam and GOG too. I also looked into it and deleted the fediverse that doesn't work. I was testing and forgot to delete the first one. So, only the good one remains. Added more stuff. It's all optional, and I like lots of options.

Would it be possible to add a last.fm field for our profiles? I'm a bit old school and all my music is local. I have a last.fm plugin for my player and it would be nice to share my last.fm profile.
