Yeah, Lain was definetly so ahead of it's time. Recently I watch it again and is totally in my top 5 for sure.
And for old animes I rewatched here is one of my favorites: Escaflowne

Apparently, the 1993 film Ninja Scroll got a TV adaptation in the mid-00s. Written by none other than Toshiki Inoue, who gave such tokusatsu gems as Chojin Sentai Jetman from 1991. He also wrote a few Kamen Rider seasons

I'm a bit whelmed, which is to be expected. The animation style/quality cannot match the original film to begin with, but on its own, it doesn't hold up. Washed out look, uninspired take on the IP, a bit stilted. Ultimately, the show feels as one-off and hollow as...well, an anime film made mostly for action and style being stretched razor-thin on TV.

i just wanna say, nothing else Inoue has ever written stood as boring and unimportant for as long as the first 7 episodes of Ninja Scroll: The Series has. Dude definitely wrote this to pay the bills and no other drive; I'm hoping i get blindsided by an arc setup but brother, it ain't coming

Apologies for not following up! Escaflowne has been on my mental watchlist for two decades. I'm admittedly slow to catch onto fantasy anime (a certain really shitty source for gaming news in the mid-00s grossly misinformed my preconceived notions of JRPGs, I have been slowly recovering in the intervening years)
