The Symbolic Species by Terrence Deacon, The Kingdom of Speech by Tom Wolfe and Decoding Chomsky by Chris Knight. They all have one thing in common -- utter charlatanism by people running their mouth about things they simply do not understand. Penrose's books on consciousness are also good candidates for this list.

I just finished reading a book called "Flowers for Algernon", basically the main character has mental issues that results in a lower IQ, he undergoes a procedure that increases his IQ and you follow along his thoughts. He keeps a journal throughout the whole process and it's an interesting way to convey how he communicates and shows progress through those writings.
It's the first book in a hot minute where I just could not put it down. I think I finished it in the course of two days because I could not get enough of it. I will warn folks it does have some outdated language so if that's something that would turn you off I'd suggest caution.
