The next evolution of emulation: Reverse engineering an entire code base and translating it into a more modern language, allowing it to be recompiled for other systems: Windows, Linux, Mac, Android and others. If you're a hardcore PC gamer, you're already familiar with this concept, as source ports have been used to run older PC games with available Source Code for years.

I agree that I think these decomp\recomp projects are the future of emulation and game preservation. The only ones I've tried out are the Ship of Harkinian Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask ports and they ran great! Both games have good mod choices for better textures and changing the icon layout. I really like the free cam option so you can use the right stick to rotate the camera instead of being stuck with the default camera angle.

Infinity Blade keeps popping up in my life and I'm really not sure how, but I'm elated to learn that there's a decompile for it now. I had no idea that decompilations/recompilations were gaining so much popularity. I'd love to hear about more of them!

I've really been meaning to jump on the Ship of Harkinian. OoT was a pretty big game for me growing up. I remember playing it on virtual console on my Wii.

Hoping for Jet Force Gemini. Rare's decision not to use the N64 expansion pak was a bad call. The game has severe frame-rate issues. A shame, as its an interesting game.

HarbourMasters are also a big pillar on the decomp. community, the OOT PC port came almost right after the SM64 one. Funny enough though, personally, i am not a big fan of their approach to make PC ports. I feel like they allow too many debug options open for people, which makes the port more like something to experiment rather than just play. It's great for people who like tinkering with engines but not for casual play.

I know there's an "active" Jet Force Gemini decomp. project, but it isn't there yet. It might be get done faster though, now that there is a tool that was just made to decompile N64 games.

I'm looking forward to this one. I never actually played through this or skyward sword. I played the previous games to death and I think my favorites are OOT, Majora's Mask, and Wind Waker in no particular order. Somehow I was distracted when Twilight Princess came out. I've tried to start it a few times, but it didn't hook me as quickly as Wind Waker.

I haven't watched the whole video yet; do you know if they plan to give us CRT filters and save states? I guess I could use shader glass if need be.

YES!!! Carmageddon. This was on my list of games to re-play when I finish building my W98 PC... but the re-compilation might be the better way to play this.

I'd love a database of these projects. Do you keep one or know where there is a good list?

I should point out that the Perfect Dark PC port is fantastic, and even has high refresh rates and multiplayer. Its a must play, and the definitive way to experience the game.

A Twilight Princess PC port is out now! This is a different one than I had posted before but it looks like they've added some nice QoL features. I'm looking forward to testing out gyro aiming on it.
